Counting of votes in the vice-presidential election began at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (September 9, 2025) after over 98% of MPs exercised their franchise in the contest between NDA nominee C.P. Radhakrishnan and joint opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy.  

The counting was underway in the new Parliament building under the supervision of Returning Officer P.C. Mody, Rajya Sabha Secretary General. The results will be announced late evening. The polling concluded at 5 p.m. with over 98% of votes being cast in the election, official sources said. 

Government sources said that 13 members have abstained from voting, while Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that all Opposition members have voted, calling it an “unprecedented 100% turnout”. Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to vote. 

Vice-President-elect C.P. Radhakrishnan on Tuesday (September 9, 2025) described his win as a victory of the “nationalistic ideology” and vowed to work towards making India a developed nation by 2047. “The other side camp (Opposition alliance) said that this (election) is an ideological fight, but from the voting pattern, we understand that the nationalistic ideology has emerged victorious,” Mr. Radhakrishnan said in his first public remarks after the win. “If we have to develop Viksit Bharat by 2047, which means we should not do politics in everything, now we will have to concentrate on development,” he said. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Mr. Radhakrishnan and said he will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse. In a post on X, Mr. Modi said his life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised. 

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the new V-P, saying, “Congratulations to Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan on being elected as the Vice President of India! Your decades of rich experience in public life will contribute significantly to the nation’s progress. I extend my best wishes to you for a successful and impactful tenure.” 

Former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar also extended greetings to his successor, C.P. Radhakrishna,n in a letter, in his first public statement since demitting office, saying that the office of the Vice-President will attain greater glory with his vast experience. He said, “Your elevation to this august office reflects the trust and confidence of the representatives of our nation.”
