Bangladesh’s current regime in charge, headed by the Nobel Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, is  ready to roll out a “July Declaration.” And this is happening on August 5th, to mark the one-year  of the student riot that made the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina flee the country.

This declaration is all about making official this July-August uproar. The hope is that it’ll pull everyone together as a country around the ideas of  bringing back a more democratic system, and changing some of the ways things are done. This unveiling is seen as an important step in the country’s political shift by the temporary government, who took over after Hasina left.

This unveiling of the declaration is expected to make the country’s political foundation veer off from the idea they call “Mujibism,” which is a main part of Bangladesh’s 1972 constitution.

This has sparked a lot of back and forth among different political groups and law people. This will be held at 5 PM on Dhaka’s Manik Mia Avenue, and will be accompanied with music, drone shows, and flowers at July Martyrs’ Memorials all over the place. They have the “Notes on July” planned too, where they’re asking people to share their thoughts on the uprising.

But the July Declaration is getting some pushback, especially from this group called the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). They’re saying that changes to the constitution should happen  the right way in parliament.

Some of the law bigwigs are also worried about potential instability if the 1972 constitution is dumped. Even though there’s all this worry, the interim government, under pressure to smooth things over and address what made the uprising happen in the first place, sees the declaration as a vital step to make these changes from the student movement official. The government’s media wing has confirmed they’ve finalized the draft and will present it on August 5th.

This much-anticipated event shows how much the country wants a more democratic and fair society, and that change isn’t easy for the interim government trying to create a stable and equal future for Bangladesh..
