Both houses in U S Congress is under control of Democrats after a stunning mid term victory. It is more than a let down to Trumpism..
This is a moment of vindication and restoration for democracy. For these are polarised times.
The argument and players were locked in impermeable echo chambers. And the executives assumed extra-large powers.
The US midterm results are a pointer to democracy’s undimmed ability to correct itself through the ballot box. It leads to opening spaces in the middle to apply checks and balances.
Edge has been taken off the extreme. Trump has cast the election as a referendum on his presidency.
He urged the voters to pretend that he was on the “ticket”. They took him at his word.
In choosing issues over identity, the voters restored an essential safeguard. Trump must now contend with a legislature that.could put obstacles for his politics and policies.
Democrats showed that they could speak to
voters in rural and red states. Republican strongholds such as Texas, Kansas, Iowa, North and South Carolina were flipped.
For the Republicans, the lessons in Trumpism now yields diminishing returns. Issues were weighed rather than personality cults and the best came through.
Divisive attacks were made. But they backfired.
The midterm verdict may be American. That is why it resonates far beyond America.
