Malda, West Bengal:The long-awaited plan for a new airport in Malda district has gained
momentum as authorities have reportedly identified land in the Gazole–Atmile–Narayanpur
region for the proposed project. The initiative is expected to improve air connectivity in North
Bengal and boost trade, tourism, and economic activities across the region.According to
sources, the proposed airport project is being considered as an alternative to the old Malda
Airport located in English Bazar. The existing airport reportedly faces several infrastructural
limitations, including lack of space for runway expansion and increasing urban congestion
around the area.Officials believe the Gazole–Atmile–Narayanpur belt is more suitable for a
modern airport because of the availability of larger open land parcels and better scope for future
expansion. The proposed site could also improve connectivity with nearby districts as well as
neighbouring states like Bihar and Jharkhand. The airport project is expected to play a major role
in strengthening transportation facilities in North Bengal. Once completed, it may reduce travel
time between Malda and Kolkata and support tourism to historical destinations such as Gour
and Adina.
The development could also benefit local industries and businesses, especially Malda’s famous
mango and silk trade, by improving cargo transportation and logistics facilities.Sources said
discussions regarding land acquisition, environmental clearance, and infrastructure planning are
still underway. Final approval for the project is yet to be announced by the state government and
the Ministry of Civil Aviation.Residents and business communities in Malda have welcomed the
proposal, expressing hope that the airport will create new employment opportunities and
accelerate regional development in the coming years.
