India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday delivered a strong message against terrorism at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting held in Bishkek, urging member nations to adopt a united and uncompromising stance against extremist threats.Addressing the high-level gathering, Singh emphasised that terrorism remains one of the most serious challenges to regional and global peace. He called for a “zero-tolerance” policy and warned against double standards in dealing with terror networks, in an apparent reference to countries that shelter or support such activities. The meeting, convened under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, brought together defence ministers from key member states including India, China, Russia, Pakistan, and Central Asian nations to deliberate on pressing security issues.Singh stressed that this should not be an era of war, highlighting the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperation in resolving conflicts.
His remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia, which have raised concerns over regional stability. On the sidelines of the summit, Singh held bilateral talks with Dong Jun, where both sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and discussed ways to maintain peace and stability in border areas. The interaction is seen as a significant step in continuing military-level engagement between India and China.
The Indian delegation also engaged with other SCO members to strengthen defence cooperation and enhance collective security mechanisms. Experts note that India’s firm stand on terrorism aligns with its long-standing policy of advocating global accountability and cooperation in counter-terror efforts. The SCO, established in 2001, has emerged as a major regional bloc focusing on security, economic cooperation, and combating terrorism and extremism. The Bishkek meeting gains added significance as the organisation approaches its 25th anniversary, amid increasing global fragmentation.India’s participation in the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting underscores its commitment to regional peace and security. With a strong call for unity against terrorism and emphasis on dialogue over conflict, New Delhi has reaffirmed its role as a key stakeholder in shaping the region’s security architecture.
