Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar, who is a close friend of Imran, on Tuesday expressed distress to witness the current state of the former Pakistan skipper. The comment by Gavaskar came shortly after 14 former captains, including him, wrote to Shehbaz Sharif, the current Prime Minister of Pakistan, requesting adequate medical and legal facilities for the renowned all-rounder.
“It’s terrible what they are doing to him. We have been friends since he was trying to qualify as an overseas player for Worcestershire and not just rivals on the field,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Gavaskar has previously disclosed that the all-rounder played a key role in prolonging his career. “You can’t retire now. Pakistan is coming to India next year, and I want to beat India in India. If you aren’t part of that team, it won’t be the same. Come on, let’s have one last tilt against each other,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for the Times of India in 2018. Gavaskar had conveyed Imran about plans to retire after the tour to England in 1986. Imran was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2018 and was removed four years later.
