Zee Entertainment Secures Historic Deal to Broadcast FIFA World Cups in India

Indian football fans can officially breathe a massive sigh of relief. Ending a months-long commercial standoff and market uncertainty, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has signed a landmark partnership with FIFA. The massive multi-platform agreement secures exclusive broadcasting and digital streaming rights for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in India, positioning Zee as a major player in the subcontinent’s sports broadcasting landscape.

The agreement comes just ten days before the highly anticipated 48-team tournament kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico on June 11, 2026. India had remained one of the final major global markets without a designated broadcaster due to differences in rights valuations. Industry sources indicate that while FIFA initially demanded close to $100 million for the market package, they lowered their asking price to roughly $60 million, allowing Zee to step in and secure a critical toehold in the sports broadcast market. Following the announcement, shares of Zee jumped around 7 percent on the stock market.

Under the expansive partnership running through 2034, Zee will deliver exhaustive coverage of 39 premium FIFA events. The portfolio goes well beyond the standard men’s tournaments, locking in media rights for the 2030 Men’s World Cup, the 2027 Women’s World Cup, and a variety of youth classifications including the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups. Fans will be able to catch all the live tournament action on television through Zee’s linear network, UNITE8 Sports, while digital users can stream the matches directly on the ZEE5 platform.

The strategic investment signals a bold entry into sports broadcasting for Zee, arriving at a time when midnight and early-morning kickoff time zones pose a unique programming challenge for South Asian audiences. Due to the 10-to-12-hour time difference with the North American hosts, only 14 out of the total 104 World Cup games will begin before midnight for fans in India, with the grand final scheduled for a 12:30 AM IST start on July 19. Expressing confidence in the long-term growth of the game, ZEEL CEO Punit Goenka stated that the investments in media rights and dedicated sports channels reflect a clear belief in football’s potential, aligning with their sharp focus on growth and profitability
