Young Leaders Rise as Nepal’s 2026 Election Shifts the Political Landscape

Nepal is experiencing a massive political shift as the 2026 General Election results show a wave of support for new, younger leaders over traditional politicians.

Following a year of intense protests led by the “Gen Z” generation, the newly formed Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is currently heading toward a landslide victory.

Leading this charge is the popular rapper-turned-politician Balendra “Balen” Shah, who is the party’s candidate for Prime Minister. Preliminary results show the RSP leading in a significant majority of seats across the country, signaling a major rejection of the old political guard.

The election results have been particularly tough for veteran leaders like former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and reformist Gagan Thapa, both of whom are trailing behind RSP candidates in their own strongholds.

For instance, in Jhapa-5, Balen Shah has secured a commanding lead over Oli, who previously held the seat for years. While traditional figures like Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ managed to secure individual wins, their parties are performing poorly overall. This trend indicates that Nepali voters are prioritizing fresh faces and systemic change over the established parties that have dominated the country’s politics for decades.

International observers, including India and China, are watching the results closely as the new government will decide Nepal’s future foreign policy. China has already congratulated Nepal on the smooth voting process, though it is wary of the defeat of pro-Beijing figures like Oli.
