The West Bengal government has granted sanction to prosecute former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in connection with alleged financial irregularities during his tenure at the institution.

The move is expected to accelerate legal proceedings in one of the most closely watched cases in the state.According to official sources, the sanction was issued after examining documents submitted by central investigative agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The approval allows agencies to proceed with prosecution under various sections related to corruption, criminal conspiracy, cheating, and money laundering.

The allegations against Sandip Ghosh involve irregularities in procurement processes, misuse of hospital funds, and suspicious transactions linked to vendors and contractors associated with RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Investigators are also probing the alleged role of several private firms that reportedly received contracts during his tenure. The controversy surrounding the former principal intensified after the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital in August 2024 sparked nationwide outrage. During subsequent protests and investigations, allegations of corruption and administrative misconduct within the hospital administration came under scrutiny. Following directions from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI registered a case into the alleged financial irregularities and later expanded its investigation. The ED subsequently launched a parallel money laundering probe based on the CBI’s findings.

Officials stated that prosecution sanction is legally required before initiating court proceedings against a public servant for acts linked to official duties. With the approval now granted, investigative agencies are expected to file further legal submissions before the designated courts in the coming days. The case continues to draw significant public and political attention across West Bengal as investigations into both the corruption allegations and the trainee doctor’s murder case remain ongoing.
