Wangchuk Urges Centre to Break Silence and Resume Ladakh Dialogue to Prevent Regional Instability

On April 13, 2026, climate activist SonamWangchuk issued a formal appeal to the Government of India to restart negotiations regarding the political future of Ladakh. Following his release from a six-month detention under the National Security Act (NSA), Wangchuk warned that a 70-day communication gap between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and regional representatives is fostering instability in the strategically sensitive border union territory.

Representing the Apex Body Leh (ABL) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), Wangchuk demanded that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) end the deadlock. He called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to initiate talks to prevent the situation from escalating, noting that despite the unconditional revocation of his detention, which previously raised hopes for a “meaningful dialogue,” no new date for talks has been announced.

The agitation, which seeks protection for Ladakh’s unique culture, ecology, and land rights following its 2019 conversion into a Union Territory, has been ongoing for years. Although negotiations were ongoing, they stalled following violent protests in September 2025 that led to injuries and deaths. Wangchuk emphasized that while he prefers to step back, he will join the negotiations if required by the leadership.

Wangchuk, known for his non-violent approach, maintained that the demands are legitimate, focusing on the 6th Schedule’s protective provisions for the 97% tribal population. The community leaders have consistently demanded a Member of Parliament for each district and constitutional safeguards to prevent industrial and cultural encroachment in the Ladakh border area. The movement, which has seen participation from young residents and local leaders, awaits a constructive response from the Centre to ensure peace and stability in the region.
