Trump Unveils New Air Force One Gifted by Qatar Amid Security and Ethics Debate

US President Donald Trump has unveiled a newly modified presidential aircraft that will temporarily serve as Air Force One, after the luxury Boeing 747-8 was transferred from Qatar to the United States. The aircraft was displayed at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, marking a major upgrade to the ageing presidential fleet.

The aircraft, originally owned by Qatar, has undergone extensive modifications to meet presidential requirements, including advanced communication systems and security upgrades. The jet features a new red, white and blue exterior design, replacing the traditional light blue colour scheme associated with previous Air Force One aircraft.

Trump praised the aircraft, describing it as a highly advanced “flying White House” and said the United States needed a modern presidential plane comparable to those used by other global leaders. The aircraft will serve as a temporary replacement while the next-generation Air Force One planes, being developed by Boeing, face delays.

The decision to accept the Qatari aircraft has triggered political and ethical debates in the United States. Critics have questioned the acceptance of such a high-value gift from a foreign government, citing concerns over security, transparency and legal issues surrounding foreign gifts. Supporters, however, argue that the aircraft provides a practical solution while waiting for the delayed replacement planes.

The aircraft is expected to remain in service until the new Boeing-built presidential aircraft are delivered. The existing Air Force One fleet, which has been in operation for decades, has faced increasing maintenance challenges, making the temporary replacement a priority for the administration.

The unveiling highlights both the modernisation of US presidential transport and the continuing debate over the balance between diplomatic gifts, national security and government spending.
