The Invisible Leader: Where is Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei?

In the middle of a massive war, Iran has named a new leader, but no one has actually seen him.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was recently appointed as the country’s new Supreme Leader.

However, despite being in the middle of a 12-day conflict with the U.S. and Israel, Mojtaba has not made a single public appearance.

While state media celebrates his new role, his total absence from the public eye—often called being “missing in action”—has led to a flood of rumors and questions about who is really in charge.

The reason for his disappearance may be more than just a security precaution. Reports have surfaced suggesting that Mojtaba was actually injured during the same airstrikes that killed his father on February 28.

Some sources, including state television, have referred to him as a “Jaanbaz” (a term for a war hero or someone “wounded by the enemy”), hinting that he may have suffered leg injuries.

Because there are no photos or videos of him since the war began, many people wonder if he is physically capable of leading or if he is simply hiding in a high-security bunker to stay safe from further attacks. This lack of a visible leader is creating a “ghost leadership” in Iran.

At a time when the country is under heavy bombardment and the economy is struggling, people are looking for a strong face to lead them.

Instead, power seems to be shifting toward a group of military and intelligence officials, like the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), who are making the daily decisions.

Without Mojtaba appearing in person to reassure his followers, the regime is finding it harder to show strength, especially as world leaders like Donald Trump openly challenge his authority.
