“Tamil Nadu Poll Battle Heats Up as DMK Announces ₹8,000 Scheme for Women”

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has announced a new welfare initiative aimed at women voters, a ₹8,000 coupon scheme  as part of its manifesto for the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. The scheme, titled “Illatharasi”, seeks to provide a one-time coupon worth ₹8,000 to eligible women, particularly homemakers from economically weaker sections. According to the party, the coupons can be used to purchase essential household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, mixer grinders, and induction stoves.Officials stated that the scheme will primarily benefit women from families that do not pay income tax, ensuring that financial assistance reaches those in need.

The initiative is designed to improve household living standards while also offering beneficiaries the flexibility to choose items based on their requirements. The DMK leadership emphasized that the scheme reflects a shift from traditional “freebie distribution” to a choice based welfare model, allowing women to decide how best to utilize the support. The party also believes that the initiative will stimulate local markets by increasing demand for household goods. The announcement comes at a politically significant time, with elections approaching in Tamil Nadu. The scheme is being viewed as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s support base among women voters, a key demographic in the state’s electoral landscape. However, the proposal has sparked criticism from opposition parties, who have questioned its implementation and transparency. Critics argue that direct cash transfers may be a more effective and less restrictive form of assistance compared to coupons tied to specific purchases.Alongside the ₹8,000 coupon scheme, the DMK has also promised to expand existing welfare measures, including increasing monthly financial aid for women and continuing free bus travel facilities. As election campaigning intensifies, the ₹8,000 coupon scheme is expected to remain a central issue in the political discourse, highlighting competing visions of welfare and development in Tamil Nadu.
