In a major change for West Bengal’s politics, veteran leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay has officially become the Leader of the Opposition in the state’s 18th Legislative Assembly as of May 10, 2026. A trusted and long-time supporter of Mamata Banerjee, Chattopadhyay currently serves as the MLA from Ballygunge. He has been given the important task of leading the 80 members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) who now sit on the opposition benches following the party’s recent election loss.
This appointment marks the start of a fresh strategy for the TMC. After many years in power, the party is now adjusting to its new role of questioning and countering the newly formed BJP government. To assist him in this role, two Deputy Leaders of the Opposition, Nayna Bandyopadhyay and Ashima Patra, were also appointed on the same day. Together, this leadership team will represent the TMC’s interests and voice within the Assembly.
The political landscape of the state has shifted significantly. While the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari has moved into the role of Leader of the House as the new Chief Minister, Chattopadhyay’s position is considered vital for the TMC’s survival and future growth. Experts believe his many years of experience in politics will be key to helping the party stay strong and organized while serving in the opposition. His main goal will be to guide the party through this transition and ensure they remain a powerful force in West Bengal’s government.
