Russia has expressed skepticism about the feasibility of a swift peace agreement with the United States regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has revealed that Moscow seeks a comprehensive, long-term resolution addressing the root causes of the war, rather than a temporary ceasefire that could lead to renewed hostilities.
Lavrov has stated that Russia will only agree to a deal if and only if the clauses stated in the deal do not serve both Nations purpose. Lavrov expressed that Russia is looking forward to a peace agreement. “We are aware of what a mutually beneficial agreement looks like which we have never rejected, and what a deal looks like that could lead us into another trap,” Lavrov was quoted saying.
This stance comes amid U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to mediate peace. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff are currently in Europe, engaging with allies to discuss the Ukraine conflict and other international concerns. Despite these efforts, Russia remains firm on its conditions, including halting Ukraine’s mobilization and the cessation of Western arms supplies to Kyiv terms which Ukraine has rejected.
Russia in the meantime has not stopped it’s incessant occupation of Ukrainian territories. Recent Russian strikes on Kherson resulted in civilian casualties, and Ukraine has accused Russia of violating a limited ceasefire agreement over 30 times since March.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed that he is open to discussions, he also believes unresolved issues will hinder that progress. The Kremlin has questioned the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s clauses over and over while citing past decrees that had declared negotiations with Putin “impossible”
