Rebel Within: Former TMC Minister Lodges Complaint Against Abhishek Banerjee Over ‘Autocratic’ Rule

In a major blow to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), former West Bengal minister and three-time MLA Giasuddin Molla has registered a police complaint against the party’s second-in-command, Abhishek Banerjee. The complaint, which alleges threats and systemic intimidation, underscores deep-seated fractures within the party following a high-stakes West Bengal Assembly election.

Molla, who represented the Magrahat Paschim constituency from 2011 until 2026, filed the complaint at a local police station in South 24 Parganas. The move follows his recent exclusion from the TMC’s candidate list, where he was denied a ticket and replaced by Shamim Ahamed Molla.

The police complaint doesn’t target Banerjee alone; it also names Mithun Kumar Dey, the former Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Diamond Harbour. Molla alleged that Dey acted as an enforcer, taking unwarranted punitive actions against local TMC leaders and workers who refused to bow to the “autocratic manner” in which Abhishek Banerjee operated the party.

Detailing an instance of alleged police brutality, Molla claimed a party worker was severely beaten and tortured inside a police station. According to Molla, when he attempted to intervene as the sitting legislator, the senior police officer verbally abused him and threatened him with a baton. Molla stated that despite escalating the matter directly to both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, no action was taken.

Explaining the timing of his legal action, Molla admitted he had been living in absolute fear of retaliation and heckling from his own party. He stated that he only found the courage to step forward after the political guard changed in Bengal, expressing newfound confidence in the state administration led by the newly appointed Chief Minister, BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.

This internal rebellion adds to a mounting wave of legal challenges for Abhishek Banerjee, who was also hit with a separate FIR over allegedly provocative and inflammatory speeches made during the recent election campaign.
