With the death of Raghu Rai, the country has lost one of its most influential visual storytellers. His portraits reflected the aesthetics he had perfected over the decades.

Documenting India’s social, political and cultural evolution, Rai captured the “extraordinary in the ordinary ” Small wonder, he leaves behind an unparalleled archive.

Rai’s displacement from West Punjab during Partition shaped his sensitivity to human suffering. It would define his photographic career which began in The Statesman and then there was no looking back.

His life has ended. But the moments he.captured will remain forever.
