No respite in market fall

Dalal Street had no respite on Wednesday. For the seventh session in a row, Indian equities slipped, clocking their longest losing run in 11 months as investors ran for cover amid dearer oil and rising US bond yields.

The NIFTY 50 settled at 24,078.30, down 76.60 points or 0.32%. It opened at 24,152.05, made a high of 24,172.85 and drifted to 24,025.65 before paring some losses. The BSE SENSEX closed at 76,909.68, down 325.78 points or 0.42%, after touching an intraday peak of 77,347.81.

Both indices are down roughly 2.1% over the last seven sessions. The Sensex has fallen in six of those seven days.

 THE HEADWINDS

 Crude Fire Fuels Fear

Brent crude rallied to a three-week top near $92/barrel after US President Donald Trump ruled out talks with Iran and affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz remained open. That clashed with Tehran’s claim that the chokepoint was shut, killing hopes of a quick end to the six-month Middle East standoff.

The oil spike is hurting sentiment directly. “The primary factor weighing on investor sentiment has been the sharp surge in crude oil prices as the geopolitical situation in West Asia continues to show little sign of easing,” said Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities.

With import bill pressure mounting, the RBI was seen intervening in the forex market. Traders reported state-run banks selling dollars, likely on behalf of the central bank, as the rupee hovered near 95.70.

 Yields Pull Capital West

US, German and Japanese long-term bond yields hit multi-decade peaks. That made developed-market debt look attractive again, pulling money away from emerging markets like India.

“Risk appetite in Indian market appears to have weakened considerably with Nifty witnessing sustained, gradual selling pressure,” Shah noted.

 Sectoral Bloodbath, Except IT

14 of 16 Nifty sectors ended lower.

– Financials dropped 0.4% with ICICI Bank -0.7% and Axis Bank -0.6% leading the decline

– Small-cap index fell 0.5%, mid-cap 0.2%

IT was the only gainer, up 0.7% after a 4% slide in the previous three sessions.

 CORPORATE & POLICY TRACKER

 Festive Demand, Supply Shocks

Ahead of the festival season, the Centre is mulling duty-free sugar imports and stricter stock limits as wholesale sugar prices in Kolhapur jumped ∼20% to ₹5,350/quintal since August.

In edible oils, India’s soyoil imports are set to hit a record 620,000 tonnes in August, up 46% from the YTD average. Black Sea disruptions to sunflower shipments are forcing a switch. Sunflower imports may fall to 180,000 tonnes, a 6-month low.

 SpiceJet, Zetwerk In News

The NCLT will rehear bankruptcy petitions against SpiceJet after a settlement with one lessor. It’s a lifeline for the cash-strapped carrier, whose market share has collapsed to 1.9% from 15% in 2019.

Contract manufacturer Zetwerk filed for a ₹2,600 crore IPO to cut debt, joining a revived primary market. Since July, 22 firms have launched or announced IPOs.

Factory Boom Meets Export Worry

India’s manufacturing PMI hit a 17.5-year high of 59.3 in August. But there’s a caveat: new export orders slowed to a five-month low as the looming US 50% tariff from September casts a shadow.

 GEOPOLITICS IN FOCUS

West Asia Keeps Markets On Edge

Oil remains the transmission belt for geopolitical risk. Trump’s hard line on Iran and the Hormuz uncertainty are keeping traders nervous. The government has flagged the situation as one to “watch closely” for macro impact.

 China Engagement, Border Calm

Chinese FM Wang Yi was in Delhi on Aug 18-19 for boundary talks with NSA Ajit Doval. The dialogue precedes the SCO summit and a likely visit by President Xi for the BRICS Summit in September.

India dismissed reports of fresh Chinese tents in Arunachal. Border trade through Nathu La, Shipki La and Lipulekh resumed this month after 6 years.

Energy Tie-Up With Russia

India will be the Partner Country at Russian Energy Week 2026. Moscow is pushing for more Indian investment in oil and gas as Russia remains a key crude supplier for India.

Bangladesh Reset On Hold

Dhaka says it wants a “propitious environment” before a bilateral visit, while seeking extradition of former PM Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death in absentia last year.

 STREET VIEW

With crude elevated and global yields sticky, expect volatility to persist. The IT rebound shows dip-buying is possible in oversold pockets, but broad market strength will need either oil to cool or clarity on US tariffs.

For now, it’s a stock-picker’s market in a risk-off tape.
