Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be conducted by December 7, 2026, paving the way for the formation of a newly elected civic board in Kolkata.
The announcement came during his visit to the KMC headquarters on Monday. According to the Chief Minister, the civic polls will be held within the six-monthperiod following the dissolution of the previous board.
The KMC has been functioning under an administrator after former Mayor Firhad Hakim resigned and no new board could be constituted. Addressing officials and civic representatives, Adhikari said the government had initially allowed time for the majority group to form a new board, but after the process remained unresolved, the administration decided to dissolve the body and move toward fresh elections.
He expressed confidence that a new elected board would be in place by the first week of December. During the visit, the Chief Minister also announced additional financial assistance for civic development projects and urged KMC to make greater use of central government schemes for urban infrastructure and public services. The upcoming election will be closely watched as it will determine the political control of the 144-member municipal corporation that governs Kolkata.
