Cannes is considered to be most prestigious film festival in the world. It is considered among the “Big Three” European film festivals alongside Venice and Berlin.

Held in Cannes, France it previews new films of all genres including documentaries. It was founded in 1946.

It is an invitation only festival. It is held annually in May.

The near-absence of American film industry from this year’s Cannes film festival indicate a much needed redirection. It is all the more so as the last great year on cinema on Croisette was 1994 when the triumph of Pulp Fiction reoriented Hollywood’s attention towards European cinematic prestige.

The low wattage of red on the red carpet at the 2026 Cannes International Film Festival was not incidental. Hollywood’s anxiety over early negative reviews in a time of industry churn ensured something unexpected.

It was the appearance of John Travolta in a beret. Of course, there were steam services and AI distractions.

There is no denial of the fact that it is 30-odd years since Quentin Tarantino’s debut won the Palme d’Or the festival has had the world’s Tention. It would be leaving the entire story unsaid if no mention is made of the brightest stars of Los Angeles’s brightest stars bring their charisma to the event.

The high point was perhaps Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick. It was marked by French air force’s acrobatic team Patrouille de France painted the sky with red, white and blue smoke trails.

There was a low key vibe this year. But it ensured a renewed focus on the core purpose of the festival. There were works by returning auteurs such as Pawel Pawlikowski, Christian Mungiu and Andrei Zyagintsev.

Cannes became a celebration of the art of cinema. It was certainly not an affirmation of its glamour.
