Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that she has no plans to resign from her position following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Speaking from her home in Kalighat on May 5, 2026, she told reporters that there is “no question of resigning” because she believes her party did not lose by a fair vote of the people. She argued that a resignation is only necessary if one truly loses an election, and in her view, this result was not a genuine reflection of what the public wanted.
Banerjee has raised several serious allegations about how the election was handled. She claimed that the results were part of a “conspiracy” and a “forceful attempt” to remove her from power. She specifically blamed the Election Commission of India, accusing them of “looting” the democratic process and playing “nasty games” to help her opponents. She also brought up concerns about Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), claiming that nearly 100 seats were unfairly taken away from her party due to tampering.
Even with her refusal to step down, the official numbers show that the BJP won a massive victory with 207 seats, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) dropped to 80 seats. Mamata Banerjee also lost her own personal seat in Bhabanipur to Suvendu Adhikari. While she remains defiant, her term as Chief Minister officially ends on May 7, 2026. After that date, she will no longer hold legal power, and a new government is expected to take an oath of office on May 9. Banerjee says she now plans to focus her energy on national politics with the INDIA Alliance.
