India and the United States have taken a major step toward strengthening global critical minerals supply chains by signing a new cooperation framework aimed at securing resources essential for clean energy, advanced technology, and defence manufacturing.The agreement focuses on the exploration, mining, processing, refining, and recycling of critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and rare earth elements.
These minerals are widely used in electric vehicle batteries, semiconductors, solar panels, smartphones, and military equipment.Officials from both countries stated that the partnership is designed to reduce dependence on a single global supplier and build resilient and diversified supply chains. The move comes amid growing international concerns over China’s dominance in the global rare earth and mineral processing sector. Under the agreement, India and the US will collaborate on technology sharing, investments, research, and the development of advanced refining facilities. The two countries are also expected to work together on overseas mining projects and recycling initiatives to recover valuable minerals from electronic waste and used batteries.Experts believe the partnership could boost India’s manufacturing sector, attract foreign investment, and support the country’s ambitions in electric mobility and semiconductor production. The United States, meanwhile, aims to secure reliable mineral sources for its technology and defence industries.
The agreement is also linked to broader cooperation under the Quad grouping, which includes India, the US, Japan, and Australia. Quad nations have announced plans to mobilize billions of dollars for critical minerals and clean energy supply chains.However, analysts say challenges such as limited domestic reserves, high infrastructure costs, and environmental concerns related to mining may affect implementation.The India -US critical minerals partnership is being viewed as a significant geopolitical and economic development that could reshape global supply chains in the coming years.
