Mahagathbandhan still struggling on seat sharing ahead of Bihar Elections

As Bihar is gearing up for the 2025 Assembly elections, all eyes are on the Mahagathbandhan where the partners are still struggling to decide who will contest how many seats. The alliance is led by Tejashwi Yadav’s  RJD which includes Congress as well as new entrants JMM and RLJP.

The total number of seats in the Bihar Assembly is 243. Every party wants its fair share but finding the right balance has not been easy. Meetings are happening behind the scenes almost daily at Tejashwi Yadav’s home in Patna. His team is trying to keep the alliance together with Tejashwi already announced as the chief minister face.

Things are tense as congress is reportedly asking for 65–70 seats. Mukesh Sahni wants about 55–60 seats and also eyeing the deputy chief minister’s post. The left parties are asking for 40–45 seats based on their strength in rural areas.

This time the alliance is not using any fixed formula , leaders say they are  focusing on win giving tickets to parties and candidates who are more likely to win based on feedback from the ground. Seats where the alliance lost badly in 2020 may now be given to other parties or fresh candidates.

It was expected that the seat sharing formula would be announced by September 15. But that date has passed  and talks are still going on. Inside the alliance some smaller parties are feeling  ignored while others are worried about losing their traditional seats.Congress leaders have clearly said that seat sharing must be fair.

If a decision does not come soon then there is a risk that some parties may rebel or even contest separately. That could split votes and help the BJP’s NDA which is already preparing strongly for the elections. The Mahagathbandhan still has time but not much. The longer they delay, the harder the fight becomes.
