Kolkata finally said goodbye to its long, dusty dry spell this Tuesday morning. For the first time in nearly two months, the city woke up to the refreshing sound of rain, turning a parched winter morning into a much-needed break from the haze.
While it wasn’t a massive downpour, the light showers were enough to wash the dust off the trees and settle the dry air that Kolkatans have been living with throughout January and February.
The change in weather happened because a lot of moisture traveled in from the Bay of Bengal, meeting the right air conditions over Bengal to finally create some rain clouds.
According to the weather office, the city recorded about 5.9mm of rain. It might not sound like much, but after weeks of zero precipitation, it felt like a major event for anyone stepping outside for their morning tea or commute.
However, don’t put your umbrellas away just yet. The IMD has issued a “yellow watch” for the next 24 hours, which is basically a heads-up that more weather is on the way.
We can expect more light thunderstorms and some pretty strong, gusty winds across Kolkata and nearby areas like North and South 24 Parganas and Bankura.
Even though the rain has cooled things down slightly—with temperatures sitting between 19°C and 29°C—the extra moisture means it’s going to feel a bit more humid than usual.
For now, the city is enjoying this rare, breezy pause in the weather, a welcome change for everyone who has been waiting for the skies to finally open up.
