India and Slovakia have officially upgraded their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met in Bratislava, Slovakia, on June 15, 2026, during a historic state visit. This marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has traveled to the independent nation since its formation in 1993. The two leaders held high-level talks to expand diplomatic, economic, and security ties between both countries.
The newly signed agreements focus heavily on defense and industrial technology. Both nations signed a Letter of Intent on Defense Cooperation to push for joint weapon development and military research. They also agreed to launch a new Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism to fight global security threats together.
Economic ties received a massive boost during the discussions. The leaders welcomed the progress of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement. This pact is expected to open up large markets for business and trade. Slovakia is currently facing a major shortage of workers in its growing industrial plants. To help, both sides signed a new agreement on labor migration. This pact will help skilled Indian workers safely find jobs in Slovak factories, such as car manufacturing plants.
Technology and science were also key parts of the new deals. Respective agencies will now collaborate on advanced projects like quantum computing and artificial intelligence. In fact, Slovakia will set up its first-ever India Chair on Artificial Intelligence at the Slovak Technical University. This will support human-centric research and student exchanges.
Furthermore, Slovakia supported India’s push for global changes. It backed India’s bid to become a permanent member of a reformed United Nations Security Council. This historic visit by Prime Minister Modi has opened doors for deeper friendship, making India and Slovakia much stronger partners for the future.
