"I Am a Free Bird": Mamata Refuses Resignation, Sets Sights on National Coalition

In a defiant stand following the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) significant setback in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has categorically rejected calls for her resignation. Addressing a packed press conference at her Kalighat residence on Tuesday, a resilient Banerjee declared that she would not step down, claiming a “moral victory” despite the electoral numbers favoring the BJP.

Denial of Defeat

The West Bengal Chief Minister alleged that the election results were not a reflection of the people’s mandate but rather the result of systemic manipulation. She directed sharp criticism toward the Election Commission (EC) and central forces, suggesting the contest was “not with the BJP, but with the system itself.”

“The question of resigning does not arise. We did not lose the election; it was a forceful attempt to defeat us through official channels,” Banerjee stated. She further alleged incidents of violence and claimed she was harassed by central personnel during the counting process, describing a post-poll atmosphere of “fear and intimidation.”

Strengthening the INDIA Bloc

While the TMC saw its seat share reduced to approximately 80 seats against the BJP’s 207, Banerjee signaled a major shift in her political focus toward the national stage. She revealed that top leaders from the INDIA bloc—including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Tejaswi Yadav—had reached out to offer their support.

“I am a free bird now. My target is clear: I will work to strengthen the INDIA bloc,” she remarked, emphasizing that her role would now transcend state borders to unite the opposition against the saffron surge.

The Road Ahead

Political analysts note that while her current term officially concludes on May 7, Banerjee’s refusal to concede marks the beginning of a fresh confrontation in Bengal politics. Despite the loss, she remains the focal point of the opposition, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav scheduled to meet her in Kolkata to discuss the future of the coalition.

Banerjee concluded her address with a message of hope for her supporters: “We will bounce back. I do not care for the chair; I only care for the people and the survival of Indian democracy
