VICTORIA, Seychelles — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the capital city of Victoria for a historic three-day state visit. The visit marks a dual milestone: celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Seychelles’ National Day and honoring 50 years of robust, strategic diplomatic relations between the two democracies.
PM Modi was received at the airport tarmac by Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie, accompanied by top cabinet ministers. The arrival featured a ceremonial Guard of Honour alongside vibrant cultural performances, including a traditional dance from India’s Kutch region performed by the local diaspora.
The visit underscores Seychelles’ pivotal role in India’s geopolitical framework. In a departure statement, PM Modi highlighted the island nation as a cornerstone of New Delhi’s “Vision MAHASAGAR” (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) and emphasized a shared commitment to the Global South. “Seychelles is a valued maritime partner and a close friend,” Modi shared, emphasizing that the 50-year relationship remains rooted in mutual trust and democratic values.
Bilateral engagements began swiftly on the first day. To enhance the archipelago’s maritime surveillance and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) protection capabilities, PM Modi officially handed over a “Made in India” Fast Patrol Vessel, PS Lespwar, alongside six ambulances, ten utility vehicles, and five laser radial boats. The leaders later visited the Seychelles National Botanical Garden, where Modi participated in a tree-planting ceremony, planting a Coco de Mer sapling under the environmental initiative Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.
The state visit features several historic firsts, including PM Modi becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles. A contingent of the Indian armed forces and two Indian Navy ships will also join the Golden Jubilee military parade. As the two nations look toward the next fifty years, the visit powerfully reinforces their collective resolve to maintain a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Indian Ocean region
