In a significant development, U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered a temporary halt to military strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure following what he described as “productive” discussions with Iran.

Announced Monday after two days of talks amid tensions across the Middle East to de-escalate conflict and allow diplomacy through direct high-level discussions and a unilateral U.S. decision to pause strikes for five days.
According to reports, the U.S. will refrain from targeting Iran’s electricity and fuel infrastructure during this period. Trump shared the update on the social platform Truth Social, stating that both nations had engaged in “very good and constructive” talks.
He emphasized that the pause is temporary and future decisions will depend on how negotiations progress.The announcement had an immediate impact on global oil markets. Prices of Brent crude dropped sharply from $114 per barrel to around $96, marking a decline of about 15%.
Similarly, the U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate fell by roughly 13.5% to $85.28 per barrel. The easing of tensions also brought temporary relief to concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.
Despite the U.S. move, Iran has projected the development as a strategic victory. Iranian officials claimed that their warnings of retaliation—targeting energy infrastructure across the Middle East—forced Washington to step back. An Iranian diplomat stated that any attack on Iran’s facilities would have triggered widespread counterstrikes in the region.
Tensions had escalated dramatically after a joint U.S.-Israel strike on February 28 reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran launched drone and missile attacks on U.S. bases in countries such as Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
The conflict has reportedly claimed over 3,000 lives in Iran alone.The crisis also raised serious concerns globally, especially for energy-importing nations like India.
Addressing Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and assured that the government is taking all necessary steps to maintain steady supplies of petrol and diesel.
For now, the five-day pause offers a brief window of relief. However, whether it leads to a lasting peace or merely delays further conflict remains uncertain, with the world closely watching the next steps in U.S.-Iran relations.
