Dipke, Neha Bora Among 150 Detained in Mass Delhi Police Crackdown

Pabitra Banerjee : A massive security crackdown unfolded across central Delhi on Thursday as law enforcement personnel detained around 150 demonstrators, including key activists Abhijeet Dipke and Neha Bora, following widespread calls for public demonstrations across high-security zones.Dipke was detained while leaving his residence in Jhandewalan to join the proposed march at Connaught Place, while Bora was picked up at Mandi House. Police sources said Dipke was taken to Jafarpur Kalan police station as authorities acted pre-emptively to prevent large-scale rallies from gathering momentum in commercial hubs. The detentions triggered jostling among protesters, journalists, camera crews and security personnel. Minor altercations also broke out as police attempted to disperse demonstrators at various locations, including Janpath Road and outer corridors leading to the city center, where heavy barricading was erected to limit public movement.Police also began detaining protesters who had reached Connaught Place. “Those attempting to disrupt law and order are being detained,” a police officer said, adding that around 150 people have been detained so far. Security personnel maintained a strict vigil across key transit points, checking vehicles and monitoring pedestrian movement near major metro station gates to prevent further assembly. The sudden wave of detentions comes amid heightened security measures enforced across central Delhi following recent administrative restrictions on public assembly near traditional demonstration venues. Opposition leaders and civil rights groups strongly criticized the police action, characterizing the mass detentions as an overreach intended to suppress legitimate civic participation. Law enforcement authorities, however, defended the measures, emphasizing that strict public order must be maintained to prevent traffic disruption and ensure public safety throughout busy commercial and administrative districts. Rapid Action Force teams and additional police personnel remain deployed across Connaught Place and Mandi House to prevent further attempts at gathering.
