Counting of Votes for 2026 Assembly Elections to Begin Tomorrow

The Election Commission of India (ECI) will begin the counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly Elections on Monday, May 4, 2026, across designated centers in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu to determine the state governments for the next five years. Conducted to decide the electoral fate of 824 constituencies across five regions, the vote-counting process will commence at 8:00 AM with postal ballots, followed by the electronic voting machines (EVMs). The counting will take place simultaneously across all centers under strict security and transparency measures, with the final results expected by the afternoon or evening.

Both states witnessed historic public participation during the multi-phase voting period in April. West Bengal registered an unprecedented voter turnout of over 92 percent across its two phases, marking its highest participation since India’s independence. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu recorded an impressive 84.69 percent turnout in its single-phase polling on April 23, surpassing previous state records.

The stakes are exceptionally high in both legislatures. In West Bengal, the contest has evolved into a fierce, direct face-off between the incumbent All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) led by Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The outcome will indicate whether the AITC can maintain its stronghold of 294 seats or if the opposition can mount a successful challenge against the ruling establishment.

In Tamil Nadu, the election featured a high-octane contest involving key leaders such as Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and the Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The results will determine whether the incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) retains its mandate or if the AIADMK can successfully challenge the current administration.

To ensure fairness, the ECI has set up 62 counting centers across Tamil Nadu and deployed additional observers in West Bengal, along with comprehensive CCTV monitoring. As the nation eagerly watches, early trends are anticipated by mid-morning on the ECI portal, with the final seat tallies expected to define the new political landscape of both states by Monday evening.
