CID Searches TMC Offices Linked to Mamata, Abhishek in Bengal Signature Forgery Probe

The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has intensified its probe into the alleged signature forgery case by conducting searches at locations linked to Trinamool Congress leaders Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. The investigation revolves around allegations that signatures of several Trinamool Congress MLAs were forged on a letter submitted to the West Bengal Assembly regarding the nomination of a Leader of the Opposition.

A CID team visited the Kalighat residence complex of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and searched the adjoining Trinamool Congress office. Investigators also carried out a search at an office associated with Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Camac Street as part of efforts to gather evidence in the case.

According to officials, the operation at the Kalighat premises lasted for nearly two hours. However, investigators reportedly issued a “nil seizure” report after the search, indicating that no documents or materials relevant to the case were recovered from the premises.

The controversy stems from allegations that signatures of multiple TMC MLAs were forged on a letter submitted to the Assembly Secretariat. Several legislators have already recorded statements before investigators, while the CID has collected specimen signatures for forensic examination to verify the authenticity of the disputed documents.

The investigation has also drawn attention due to repeated summons issued to Abhishek Banerjee. The TMC leader has not appeared before investigators on multiple occasions, citing prior commitments and ongoing legal proceedings. He has challenged the summons before the Calcutta High Court and sought protection from any coercive action, arguing that the matter is currently under judicial consideration.

The signature forgery case has emerged as a major political controversy in West Bengal, triggering sharp exchanges between rival political parties. With forensic examinations and witness statements still underway, the CID has indicated that the investigation remains active and that further action will depend on the evidence collected during the course of the probe.
