Indian Railways is installing CCTV cameras in coaches and locomotives to enhance passenger safety and security. This move aims at determining criminal activities , ensure monitoring, and improve transparency. These high definition cameras will be connected to centralised control rooms, aiding in quick response and better surveillance across the railway network. In a major safety upgrade, the ministry of railways has approved the installation on  July 14, 2025 . 

Objective of the move : 

• 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives will be equipped with CCTV systems, following successful pilot deployments in northern railway.  

• Each locomotive will be fitted with six cameras: one each at the front, rear, both sides, plus an additional camera in both front and rear cabs, accompanied by two desk mounted microphones per cab. 

The Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised using top-tier equipment to ensure high-quality recordings under diverse operating conditions . 

The initiative will explore AI-powered analytics, in collaboration with the India‑AI mission, enabling automated detection of suspicious behaviour and real-time alerts. 

The strategic placement aims to deter miscreants and organised gangs that exploit vulnerable passengers while maintaining discretion . 

Trials have shown positive outcomes in Northern Railway, prompting the nationwide rollout . 

With tenders floated as of July 11, the Railways aim for swift deployment across the network 

The initiative targets improving passenger safety, curbing crime, and enabling efficient incident response . 

Indian Railways’ CCTV upgrade is a major step toward safer, smarter travel. Featuring advanced cameras, audio-enabled cabs, AI analytics, and privacy safeguards, the system aims to deter crime and boost public trust. Installation timelines and monitoring protocols will evolve as part of this passenger-focused modernisation initiative.
