KOLKATA: The internal war within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) took a shocking turn on Thursday. Former party treasurer Aroop Biswas wrote an urgent letter to a private bank in Kolkata, demanding an immediate freeze on the party’s main bank accounts.
The main account holds an estimated ₹675 crore in public deposits. In his letter dated June 12, Biswas asked the bank authorities to stop all cash withdrawals and maintain a strict status quo. He warned that there is a major leadership dispute within the party and that money could be misused by unauthorized people.
This dramatic move comes right after a huge political shake-up. On June 5, the Mamata Banerjee camp removed Biswas from his long-standing role as the party treasurer and replaced him with former MP Subhasish Chakraborty. However, in his letter to the bank, Biswas still claimed to be the rightful treasurer.
The development follows a massive rebellion within the party, where a large group of MPs and MLAs openly revolted against the top leadership. Biswas stated in his letter that because rival groups are now fighting to be the “real TMC,” the bank must step in to protect the organization’s funds. He also expressed fear that signed blank cheques from his tenure might be wrongly cashed.
While rebel leaders defended his action as a way to safeguard party wealth, representatives from the core TMC camp argued that Biswas has no right to freeze the accounts since he is no longer the treasurer. With hundreds of crores now locked up in a debit freeze, the battle for the political party has officially moved into the financial world
