BJP Sweeps Himachal Municipal Polls, Wrests Control of Major Civic Bodies

In a major political blow to the ruling Congress government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a thumping victory in the Himachal Pradesh urban local body elections. According to the results declared by the State Election Commission on Sunday, the opposition BJP swept three of the four major municipal corporations that went to the polls.

The BJP successfully retained its stronghold over the Mandi Municipal Corporation and managed to wrest control of the Dharamshala and Solan civic bodies from the Congress. The ruling Congress suffered a severe dent in its urban voter base, managing to secure a majority only in the Palampur Municipal Corporation.

Out of the total 63 wards contested across these four bodies, the BJP captured 37 seats, while Congress was relegated to 23 seats, with Independents winning the remaining three.

Ward-Wise Performance Breakdown

The saffron party registered a landslide victory in Mandi, capturing 12 out of the 14 wards that went to the polls. The Congress managed to win just a single seat in the corporation.

In Dharamshala, the BJP secured a comfortable majority by winning 11 out of 17 wards, leaving the Congress with 5 seats. The contest in Solan also flipped in favor of the BJP, where the party won 10 of the 17 seats, while Congress finished with 6.

The lone silver lining for the ruling state government came from Palampur, where the Congress put up a strong defensive front, winning 11 out of 15 wards, limiting the BJP to just 4 seats.

A Public Referendum

Celebrating the landslide triumph, BJP State President Rajeev Bindal described the mandate as a public referendum against the “anti-people policies” of the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led state government. Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur added that the voters have explicitly rejected the unfulfilled promises of the ruling dispensation.

While Chief Minister Sukhu downplayed the losses by citing separate victories in rural panchayat polls, political analysts view this urban sweep as a definitive morale booster for the BJP and a major wake-up call for the Congress ahead of the 2027 state assembly elections.
