Union Home Minister Amit Shah has criticised Congress Soniya Gandhi over an alleged incident involving the singing of Vande Mataram at Congress headquarter on Independence Day.
Shah accused Gandhi of trying to stop full version of the national song and said Congress should apologize to the county.
Shah said Vande Mataram had a special place in India’s freedom struggle. He said many freedom fighters faced imprisonment, lathe charge and even death while raising the slogan of Vande Mataram.
Amit Shah addressed that Soniya Gandhi asked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to stop the song while it was played at the party headquarter. He said Congress showed disrespect towards the national song and should apologize to the people of India and to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the man who wrote Vande Mataram.
BJP president Nitin Nabin also criticised Congress. He said the incident showed that party still does not respect the national song even decades after independence.
BJP spokesperson Pradip Bhandari also accused the Congress of disrespecting the country’s freedom fighters and national values.
However, Congress strongly rejected the allegations. Jairam Ramesh said there was no attempt to stop the song. He explained Soniya Gandhi only asked for a chair because Mallikarjun had been standing for a long time. Ramesh also added that the whole song was sung at the Congress’s on Independence Day.
