Aizawl gets connected to the national rail network – 4th in the northeast after Guwahati, Agartala & Imphal

Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, has been integrated into the national railway network through the successful trial run of the 51.38-km Bairabi to Sairang rail line. Aizawl is now the fourth northeastern capital with rail connectivity, following Guwahati, Agartala, and Imphal

The project, part of the Central government’s Act East Policy, is poised to transform Mizoram’s socio economic landscape by enhancing connectivity, boosting trade, and promoting tourism. The Bairabi Sairang line, stretching from Bairabi near Assam’s border to Sairang is an engineering marvel. Navigating Mizoram’s rugged terrain, the line hosts 48 tunnels over the course of 12,853 meters, 55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges, including the towering 104 meter high Bridge No 196. The project has achieved 94.52% and is divided into four sections namely the Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang and the Mualkhang-Sairang. It will greatly reduce travel time and transportation costs. Inauguration of the project will take place after formal railway safety examinations sometime after 17th June.

Mizoram has a long history of being isolated due to its hilly topography. Connecting Aizawl to the national grid, provides access to essential supplies and long-distance travel to the previously isolated state. Local industries, particularly small scale enterprises, and tourism are expected to thrive. Reduced logistics costs will drive growth.
