In a historic diplomatic push toward Northern Europe, Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a high-impact visit to Sweden before arriving in Oslo, Norway, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Norwegian capital in 43 years. The multi-nation tour has centered on a “Green and Gold” strategy—combining sustainable technology with robust economic growth.
Sweden: Elevating to a Strategic Partnership
The Swedish leg of the tour, centered in the industrial heart of Gothenburg, saw a major upgrade in bilateral relations. PM Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson formally elevated India-Sweden ties to a Strategic Partnership.
Key outcomes included:
Innovation 2.0: The launch of the Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0.
Tech Corridor: The establishment of the India-Sweden Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor.
Trade Ambition: A commitment to double bilateral trade—currently valued at approximately $7.75 billion—within the next five years.
In a poignant moment of recognition, PM Modi was conferred with the Royal Order of the Polar Star, Sweden’s highest honor for foreign heads of government, signaling the deep personal and political rapport between the two nations.
Norway: A Historic 43-Year Milestone
Landing in Oslo on May 18, 2026, PM Modi was received with a special gesture by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. The visit is being hailed as a “maiden” journey for the PM and a long-awaited return for Indian leadership to Norway.
The discussions in Oslo are focused on the Blue Economy, green shipping, and renewable energy. Norway also officially announced its decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), a move that reinforces the maritime security and sustainability partnership between the two regions.
The 3rd India-Nordic Summit
Today, May 19, the spotlight shifts to the 3rd India-Nordic Summit. PM Modi will join leaders from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland.
“This summit is a wonderful opportunity to review our collective progress in clean tech and innovation,” the Prime Minister noted.
With Norwegian investments in Indian markets nearing $28 billion, the visit is set to provide a massive boost to the recently signed India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, solidifying India’s “Northward Turn” in global diplomacy
