Pabitra Banerjee : The Maharashtra government has officially declared a drought across 265 of the state’s 358 talukas, bringing nearly 74 percent of the administrative blocks under emergency relief measures following a prolonged dry spell and an overall 18.8 percent monsoon rainfall deficit.
The decision, issued via a formal government resolution by the administration, targets regions experiencing severe agricultural distress, particularly across Vidarbha, Marathwada, North Maharashtra, and the Pune division. State data highlighted that extended breaks in rainfall and deficits climbing past 30 percent in key divisions severely damaged standing kharif crops, depleted groundwater levels, and triggered acute water scarcity for rural communities.
The official drought notification activates twelve immediate relief measures to support crisis-hit farming families. Key interventions include the restructuring of crop loans, a temporary stay on farm loan recoveries, land revenue and land tax waivers, exemptions from agricultural pump electricity bills, and exam fee waivers for students in affected schools. Additionally, district collectors have been directed to expedite crop loss assessments (panchnamas), deploy water tankers to vulnerable habitations, and expand employment opportunities through rural works.
While farmer associations and local representatives have welcomed the swift administrative intervention, they continue to press for larger financial packages and long-term infrastructure solutions. With successive seasons of erratic weather impacting livelihoods across the hinterland, the state cabinet sub-committee remains deployed on the ground to monitor relief distribution and plan extensive water conservation projects ahead of the upcoming cycle.
