A pall of shock and grief has descended on Malda after a 20-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in a deeply disturbing incident that unfolded during a video call with his parents. The incident took place in the Srirampur area under Kaliachak on Sunday night, casting a shadow over the locality during the festive period of Eid.The deceased, identified as Abdul Jabbar, was the son of Moazzem Sheikh, a bidi worker. Jabbar, who was also engaged in the same occupation, lived with his family in Srirampur. According to family members, he left his home late at night and went to an open field located roughly 500 meters away. It was from there that he reportedly initiated a video call with his parents.
During the call, an alarming situation unfolded, leaving his parents helpless as they witnessed the young man in real time. Family members rushed to the spot immediately after, but by the time they arrived, Jabbar had already succumbed. The incident left the family devastated and triggered panic among local residents, who soon gathered at the scene.Police from Kaliachak Police Station were informed and promptly reached the location. The body was recovered and sent to Malda Medical College for a post-mortem examination. Officials stated that the exact cause and circumstances leading to the tragic act remain unclear, as no note or clear motive has been found so far.
